The 3-email welcome series every small online store needs

By · · 6 min read

Someone just joined your email list. Right now they remember your store and they are curious. A week from now, they may not.

A short welcome series uses that moment. You write it once, set it up in your email tool, and it sends itself to every new subscriber. Most email tools for online stores can do this.

Here are the 3 emails, when to send them, and what to put in each one.

Email 1: Welcome (send right away)

Its job: say thank you and give them what they signed up for.

  • Thank them for joining, in one or two lines.
  • If you promised a discount or a free guide, put it at the top. Don't make them hunt for it.
  • Add one line about what makes your store different.
  • Add one button to your best-selling products.

EXAMPLE

Subject: Welcome! Here's your 10% code

Thanks for joining. Your code is WELCOME10. It works on everything in the store. We make every candle by hand in small batches, so each one is a little different. Here's where most people start: [Shop best sellers]

Email 2: Your story (send 2 to 3 days later)

Its job: help them trust you.

  • Tell them why you started the store, in 3 to 5 short sentences.
  • Show one real photo: you, your workspace, or how the product is made.
  • Explain what makes your products different, in plain words.
  • Keep the sales part light. One link at the end is enough.

EXAMPLE

Subject: Why we started (it began in a kitchen)

Three years ago I couldn't find a candle that didn't give me a headache. So I started making my own at the kitchen table. Today we still pour every candle by hand, with plant-based wax and no harsh scents. [Meet the makers]

Email 3: Help them choose (send 5 to 7 days after joining)

Its job: make the first order easy.

  • Show 3 best sellers or customer favorites, with one line each.
  • Answer the questions people ask most: shipping times, returns, sizes.
  • If the welcome code really expires, remind them when. If it doesn't expire, don't pretend it does.

EXAMPLE

Subject: Not sure where to start?

Here are our 3 most loved scents, and who they're for. Free shipping over $50. Easy returns within 30 days. Your 10% code still works this week. [Find your scent]

The examples use a made-up candle store. Swap in your own products, offers and policies.

Simple rules for all 3 emails

  • One main button per email. More choices mean fewer clicks.
  • Short is fine. Most people read email on their phone.
  • Write like a person. Use "I" or "we", not "our company".
  • Plain subject lines. Clear beats clever.
  • Include an unsubscribe link and your business address. Most email tools add them for you. Many countries require them.
  • Send a test to yourself and open it on your phone before you turn it on.

What happens after email 3?

Move new subscribers into your regular emails. Keep a steady rhythm that you can actually keep, even if it is only twice a month. A good mix is mostly useful emails, like new products, tips or stories, with a sale now and then.
