Why your product captions sound generic, and how to fix it
By K · · 5 min read
"Elevate your style with our must-have new collection." You have seen that caption a thousand times. So have your customers, and they scroll right past it.
Generic captions are not a talent problem. They usually come from writing fast, copying what other stores do, or letting a tool write the whole thing. Here are five quick fixes.
1. Start with the moment, not the product
Don't open with what the product is. Open with when someone uses it. "Monday, 7am, coffee in hand" pulls people in faster than "Introducing our new ceramic mug."
2. Add one real detail
Pick one specific thing that is true about this product: the material, the size, how it's made, or a small feature people notice. One real detail beats three big adjectives.
3. Write the way you talk
Read your caption out loud. If you would never say it to a customer in your shop, change it. Short sentences. Normal words. "Use", not "utilize".
4. Cut the empty words
These words show up in so many captions that they no longer mean anything:
- elevate, unleash, game-changer, must-have
- curated, seamless, next-level, ultimate
Delete them and read the caption again. It usually gets better, not worse.
5. End with one clear next step
Tell people exactly what to do: "Tap the link to see all 4 colors." One action only.
Before and after
BEFORE
Elevate your mornings with our must-have new mug. Stylish, seamless and made to impress. Shop now!
AFTER
7am. Half awake. Coffee too hot. This mug has a thick handle and double walls, so your fingers stay cool. 4 colors, all hand-glazed. Tap the link to pick yours.
The example uses a made-up store. Use your own product details.
Make a one-page voice guide
This is the fastest way to stop sounding generic, for good. Write down:
- 3 words that describe your brand (for example: warm, honest, a bit funny)
- Words you like to use, and words you never use
- 3 captions you have written that you really like
Use it every time you write. If you use an AI tool, give it this guide and your product notes, then edit the result yourself. The tool gives you a start, not the finished caption.
